Gays and Lesbians in Alcoholics Anonymous
pronounced gay・la or gah・luh

Statement of Inclusion

GaL-AA (Gays and Lesbians in AA) was established to serve and have the involvement of lesbians, gay men, and others in Alcoholics Anonymous, regardless of how they choose to identify themselves. In selecting the name, careful consideration was given to a variety of combinations. While the name only directly reflects gays and lesbians, we embrace all LGBT+ members of the AA fellowship.

AALA Roundup

May 25, 2018 - May 27, 2018

Welcome to AALA 2018

“Freedom From Bondage”

AALA is an annual 30+ year-old convention that spans over Memorial Day Weekend. The weekend consists of meetings, workshops, shows, and fun activities.

While I have your attention, I would like to address some rumors that have come up since last convention:

Is the convention going to be held at the Burbank Marriott?
Not at this time.

Is convention going to happen?

Where will convention be?
The Planning Committee is diligently working on finding us a new home. As soon as we find a new home, we will get the word out through social media and word-of-mouth.

What changes should we anticipate this year?

At convention last year, the Chair encouraged anyone who was interested in helping the committee restructure and improve AALA to come to elections on Monday of convention. The elected committee is excited about making many of these changes to improve the convention experience.

Nothing is set in stone, but this is the direction we are heading:

  • The convention will be shortened to three days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • If we extend the convention to include Monday (Memorial Day), it will be a spectacular event somewhere in LA focusing on the Fellowship.
  • The programs at convention will target a broader audience. With AA as our anchor, we will be reaching out to our brother/sister fellowships (Al-Anon, OA, CMA, NA, DA, and some other A’s) and including them in our program.

At elections last year, I was elected to the position of Co-Chair. Months later, the Chair resigned and I became chair. I then appointed the acting-Treasurer to the Co-Chair position. I then appointed a qualified member to the Treasurer position. A month later, the Secretary resigned and I appointed the most qualified person on the planning committee. I am ecstatic about the solid group of individuals that have stepped up to take positions on both the Executive and Planning Committees.

I know that this sounds broken, and it was. We are pulling together to fix it, secure it, and make it better.

Thank you to everyone who has supported AALA’s Fundraisers, volunteered your time, and offered your hand to assist us in the future months.

Our theme this year is Freedom From Bondage. How appropriate that we have been given an opportunity to free ourselves from the bondage of dead weight in the structure of the convention? The committee is free to dream big and carry on the spirit of AALA in a similar but different form.

If you would like to get involved and help build an amazing 2018 AALA Convention, please email any of us and let’s get to work. Each committee member’s email is listed on the “contact us” page.

With Love, Gratitude, and Commitment,

Jonathan B
